Louisiana's Two Homeschool Options

Option 1 — State Board of Elementary & Secondary Education (BESE)

  • Apply for approval annually from BESE
  • 180 days of instruction required
  • Annual standardized test required (LEAP 360 or nationally normed test)
  • Test results submitted to BESE
  • Required subjects: English, math, science, social studies, health

Option 2 — Umbrella School (Non-Public School)

  • Enroll in a state-approved umbrella or correspondence school
  • Follow that school's curriculum and requirements
  • Often less restrictive than Option 1 in practice
  • No state testing requirement directly (umbrella school may have its own)
