Louisiana's Two Homeschool Options
Option 1 — State Board of Elementary & Secondary Education (BESE)
- Apply for approval annually from BESE
- 180 days of instruction required
- Annual standardized test required (LEAP 360 or nationally normed test)
- Test results submitted to BESE
- Required subjects: English, math, science, social studies, health
Option 2 — Umbrella School (Non-Public School)
- Enroll in a state-approved umbrella or correspondence school
- Follow that school's curriculum and requirements
- Often less restrictive than Option 1 in practice
- No state testing requirement directly (umbrella school may have its own)
