Missouri Homeschool Overview

Missouri's homeschool law (RSMo 167.031) allows parents to homeschool their children as a private school exemption. Missouri does not require families to register with the school district or the state. However, families must maintain records of instruction hours and cover certain subject areas.

MO Homeschool Requirements

  • No registration with school district or state required
  • 1,000 hours of instruction per year required (600 must be in core subjects)
  • Written log required — records of subjects taught and activities
  • Samples of work must be maintained (not submitted, just retained)
  • Core subjects: reading, math, social studies, language arts, science
  • No standardized testing required by the state
  • Compulsory age: 7–17 years old

Record-Keeping in Missouri

Maintain a written log of instruction hours and subjects covered. Keep samples of your child's work (written assignments, quizzes, projects). These records do not need to be submitted but must be available if ever requested. Keep records for at least one year.
