South Carolina's Three Homeschool Options
South Carolina law (SC Code § 59-65-40, 45, 47) offers three distinct legal frameworks for homeschooling. Families choose the option that best fits their situation.
Option 1 — School District
- Enroll with local school district as a homeschool student
- Parents must have a high school diploma
- 180 days / 4.5 hours per day of instruction
- Annual nationally normed test required, results submitted to district
- Subjects: reading, writing, math, science, social studies
Option 2 — SC Association of Independent Home Schools (SCAIHS)
- Join an approved homeschool association
- Parents must have a high school diploma
- 180 days of instruction required
- Annual portfolio review by the association
- Association sets curriculum and oversight standards
Option 3 — Third-Party Accountability Groups
- Join an approved third-party accountability organization
- Fewer restrictions than Options 1 and 2
- Organization sets specific requirements
- Most flexibility of the three options
