South Carolina's Three Homeschool Options

South Carolina law (SC Code § 59-65-40, 45, 47) offers three distinct legal frameworks for homeschooling. Families choose the option that best fits their situation.

Option 1 — School District

  • Enroll with local school district as a homeschool student
  • Parents must have a high school diploma
  • 180 days / 4.5 hours per day of instruction
  • Annual nationally normed test required, results submitted to district
  • Subjects: reading, writing, math, science, social studies

Option 2 — SC Association of Independent Home Schools (SCAIHS)

  • Join an approved homeschool association
  • Parents must have a high school diploma
  • 180 days of instruction required
  • Annual portfolio review by the association
  • Association sets curriculum and oversight standards

Option 3 — Third-Party Accountability Groups

  • Join an approved third-party accountability organization
  • Fewer restrictions than Options 1 and 2
  • Organization sets specific requirements
  • Most flexibility of the three options
