Most parents who look for alternatives are dealing with one of these issues: (1) their child is under age 10 and struggles to sit through lecture videos, (2) they want voice-narrated lessons rather than videos that can be paused and re-watched passively, (3) they want a tool that covers science and social studies at the same depth as math, or (4) they want more engagement and interaction than a video + problem set provides.
The biggest difference from Khan Academy: Lumi is interactive and voice-narrated rather than video-based. Instead of watching a lecture, kids hear Lumi explain a concept while seeing it illustrated, then answer questions to confirm understanding — all narrated, all interactive. Better fit for ages 4–12. Covers math, ELA, science, and social studies K–8 with the same level of rigor as Khan's math content.
IXL is the strongest pure practice tool for math and ELA K–12. Deeper skill taxonomy than Khan in both subjects. The trade-off: no instruction whatsoever — it's drills only. Best used alongside something that teaches (like Lumi or Khan).
Khan Academy Kids is the animated, interactive version of Khan Academy built for ages 2–8. It's free, covers Pre-K through 2nd grade math and ELA, and is genuinely well-made. Best free option for early learners. Tops out at about 2nd grade level.
If engagement is the primary concern (keeping a reluctant learner practicing math), Prodigy's game format can be more motivating than Khan for grades 3–7. Math only, no instruction, but the RPG loop creates motivation that pure practice platforms lack.
