Assessment Methodology

Lumi Academy uses a multi-layered assessment approach designed to measure genuine understanding rather than rote memorization:

Lesson-Embedded Assessment

Every lesson contains respond steps where the learner must demonstrate understanding before progressing. Response types include: verbal answers (speech recognition), multiple choice selection, picture identification, tracing/writing, and problem solving. Each response is scored in real time.

Adaptive Remediation

If a learner scores below 70% on a lesson, Lumi automatically queues a remediation pass of the same topic with a different instructional approach. This ensures concepts are genuinely mastered before the curriculum advances.

AI-Powered Formative Assessment

For Academy-track learners (ages 6+), Lumi uses AI-generated lesson steps that assess higher-order thinking skills including explanation, application, and analysis — beyond simple recall.

Instructional Time & Attendance

Lumi Academy tracks instructional time and school day completion:

Each lesson averages approximately 4 minutes of active instructional time
A full School Day session includes multiple lessons across subjects (typically 20–40 minutes)
School Day completions are logged by date to Firestore and are visible in the Parent Dashboard attendance calendar
The Progress Report (generated from Parent Dashboard) includes a full attendance log of all school day dates completed
Parents can set daily time limits to ensure appropriate screen-time boundaries

Data Privacy & Compliance

COPPA Compliance

Lumi Academy is designed for children ages 2–14, with accounts exclusively created and managed by parents or guardians. We comply fully with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA):

No personal information is collected directly from children
Verifiable parental consent is obtained before any child profile is created
No behavioral advertising — ever
Full data deletion available in-app within 7 business days
Data minimization: only the minimum data necessary to provide educational services is collected

FERPA Readiness

While FERPA applies formally to schools and districts, Lumi Academy's data architecture is designed to be FERPA-compatible for institutional partnerships:

Educational records are accessible only to the authenticated parent/guardian
Parents have full access, correction, and deletion rights for all records
No sharing of student data with third parties for non-educational purposes
Data Protection Agreements (DPAs) available for institutional partners upon request
