Iowa's Two Homeschool Options
Option 1 — Competent Private Instruction (CPI)
- File annual report with the school district by June 1
- 148 days of instruction per year
- Annual assessment required (standardized test or portfolio)
- Results reviewed by licensed teacher or district
- Parent doesn't need to be a licensed teacher
Option 2 — Independent Private Instruction (IPI)
- File annual report with the school district by September 1
- 148 days of instruction required
- No annual assessment required
- Must provide instruction in the major subject areas
- More independent — no oversight of progress

Which Option is Right for Your Family?
Families who want accountability support and assessment feedback may prefer Option 1 (CPI). Families who want maximum independence and prefer to self-direct without annual reviews choose Option 2 (IPI). Both require covering the core subjects and filing an annual report.
