How Children Learn to Read with Lumi

1
Pre-K / Ages 3–4

Print Awareness & Letter Recognition

Children learn that print carries meaning, that we read left to right, and begin recognizing all 26 upper and lowercase letters. No reading required — Lumi says every letter name and sound aloud.

2
Kindergarten / Ages 5–6

Phonemic Awareness & Short Vowels

Kids learn to hear individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken words, segment words into sounds, and begin decoding CVC words (cat, sit, hop). Short vowel sounds a, e, i, o, u are mastered. Dolch Pre-K sight words introduced.

3
1st Grade / Ages 6–7

Blends, Digraphs & Sight Words

Beginning blends (bl, cr, st), ending blends (nd, nt, sk), and digraphs (ch, sh, th, wh) are introduced. Long vowel patterns (CVCe: cake, bike, hope) and Dolch 1st grade sight words are mastered.

4
2nd Grade / Ages 7–8

Complex Patterns & Fluency

R-controlled vowels (ar, er, ir, or, ur), diphthongs (oi, oy, ou, ow), vowel teams (ea, ee, ai, ay), and silent letters. Dolch 2nd and 3rd grade words. Reading fluency and comprehension build.

5
3rd Grade & Beyond

Vocabulary, Comprehension & Analysis

Prefixes, suffixes, Greek and Latin roots, context clues, figurative language, main idea, text structure, author's purpose, and literary analysis — building toward full reading independence.

Aligned with the Science of Reading

The research is clear: systematic, explicit phonics instruction is the most effective way to teach children to read. Lumi's reading curriculum is built on this evidence base — letter-sound relationships are taught directly and in sequence, not discovered incidentally. Blending is modeled. Patterns are made explicit. This is how the brain learns to read, and it's how Lumi teaches.

This approach is especially critical for children with dyslexia or other reading challenges, for whom implicit whole-language approaches consistently fail. Lumi's explicit, multisensory format (auditory + visual + kinesthetic tap) is proven to work for a wider range of learners.

Frequently Asked Questions

My 4-year-old can't read anything yet. Where do they start?
Start at Pre-K or Kindergarten level. Lumi's earliest lessons cover letter recognition and beginning sounds — no prior reading knowledge needed. Since Lumi speaks everything aloud, children who can't read a single word can still do full lessons and learn from day one.
My 7-year-old is struggling to read. Is Lumi too basic or too advanced?
Set the profile to a lower grade level — maybe kindergarten or 1st grade — and work up from where your child actually is. Lumi doesn't care what grade your child is "supposed to be" in; it meets them where they are. Many families use this exact approach to help struggling readers catch up.
Does Lumi use phonics, sight words, or both?
Both — and in the right proportion at each stage. Phonics instruction is primary in K–2. Sight words (high-frequency words that don't always follow phonics rules) are introduced gradually alongside phonics. By 2nd and 3rd grade, the balance shifts to fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension as the decoding foundation is solid.
