Collision Mountains
- When two continental plates collide, the land crumples and folds upward

Altitude Zones: A World in Layers
As you climb a mountain, the temperature drops about 3.5ยฐF for every 1,000 feet of elevation. This creates distinct climate zones stacked on top of each other โ like traveling from the tropics to the Arctic without moving north!

Forest
- Deciduous and mixed forests โ oak, maple, birch, and wildflowers
- Home to deer, black bears, foxes, squirrels, and songbirds
- Warmest zone with the most rainfall โ similar to surrounding lowland biome

Conifer Forest
- Dense conifer forests โ pine, fir, and spruce trees dominate
- Home to elk, mule deer, black bears, and hawks
- Cooler and wetter than the base โ heavy snowfall in winter

- Wildflower meadows burst with color in short summers โ aster, columbine, paintbrush

- Grows in harsh, high-altitude environments in the western United States
- Extremely slow growth โ some are only a few feet tall after hundreds of years

Mount Everest stands 29,032 feet above sea level โ the highest point on Earth. But it's not done growing! The Indian tectonic plate continues to push into the Eurasian plate, causing Everest to grow about 4 millimeters (0.16 inches) per year. At the same time, erosion from wind, ice, and earthquakes wears it down. The net result: Everest stays roughly the same height over human timescales.
