Trees are the largest plants on Earth โ and they're one of the most important living things for our planet's health!
The Two Main Types of Trees
All trees can be divided into two broad categories based on how they handle their leaves โ particularly through the changing seasons. Understanding this difference is one of the first steps in learning to identify trees!
๐
Deciduous Trees
Lose Leaves in Fall
Shed all their leaves in autumn and grow new ones each spring
Leaves change color before falling โ green chlorophyll breaks down, revealing yellow, orange, and red pigments that were always there
Examples: oak, maple, elm, birch, cherry, apple, beech, and ash
๐ฒ
Evergreen Trees
Keep Leaves Year-Round
Keep their leaves (often needle-shaped) all year โ replacing them gradually rather than all at once
Waxy, needle-like leaves resist freezing and reduce water loss in cold, dry winters
Examples: pine, spruce, fir, cedar, redwood, holly, and most tropical trees
Parts of a Tree
๐ฟ
Roots
Underground Network
Absorb water and minerals from the soil through millions of tiny root hairs
Anchor the tree in the ground โ can spread wider than the tree is tall
Some trees share nutrients with neighboring trees through underground fungal networks
๐ชต
Trunk
Central Support
Outer bark protects the tree from insects, disease, fire, and temperature extremes
Cambium layer just under the bark is the living growing tissue โ adds a new ring each year
Heartwood at the center provides structural strength โ it's dead wood but essential for support
๐ฟ
Branches & Crown
Light Gatherer
Branches spread out to position leaves where they can capture the most sunlight
The crown (all branches and leaves together) can cover a huge area in large trees
Provide habitat, nesting sites, and food for birds, squirrels, and insects
๐
Leaves
Solar Panels
Capture sunlight for photosynthesis โ converting COโ and water into glucose and oxygen
A large oak tree may have 200,000 leaves โ providing a huge surface area for photosynthesis
Release water vapor through transpiration โ cooling the tree and contributing to rainfall
Reading Tree Rings
When a tree is cut down, you can count the rings in its trunk to determine its age โ one ring per year. Scientists who study tree rings are called dendrochronologists. Wider rings indicate years with good growing conditions (plenty of rain and warmth); narrow rings indicate drought, cold, or other stressful years. Tree rings can reveal hundreds of years of climate history!
Amazing Tree Records
๐ด
Oldest Tree
Methuselah
A bristlecone pine tree in the White Mountains of California
Over 5,000 years old โ it was already 3,000 years old when the Egyptian pyramids were built
Its exact location is kept secret to protect it from vandalism
๐
Tallest Tree
Hyperion
A coastal redwood in Redwood National Park, California
Stands 380.3 feet tall โ taller than a 35-story building
Coastal redwoods thrive in the foggy, mild climate of northern California
โ๏ธ
Widest Trunk
El รrbol del Tule
A Montezuma cypress in Oaxaca, Mexico
Trunk circumference of 137 feet โ about 38 feet in diameter
Estimated to be between 1,400 and 3,000 years old
๐๏ธ
Largest by Volume
General Sherman
A giant sequoia in Sequoia National Park, California
Contains 52,500 cubic feet of wood โ the largest living tree by volume on Earth
Still growing โ adds enough wood each year to make a 60-foot-tall tree!
Why Trees Matter
๐จ
Oxygen & Air
Breathing Easy
A mature tree produces enough oxygen for 2 people to breathe for a year
Filter air pollutants and dust, improving air quality in cities
๐ฆ
Wildlife Habitat
Home to Hundreds
A single oak tree can support over 500 different species of insects, birds, and animals
Provide nesting sites, shelter from predators, and food sources
Dead trees ("snags") are just as important as living ones โ woodpeckers, owls, and bats depend on them
๐ง๏ธ
Water Cycle
Rain Makers
Large forest trees release hundreds of gallons of water per day through transpiration
This moisture rises and forms clouds โ forests create their own rainfall
Tree roots prevent soil erosion and allow rainwater to soak in rather than run off
๐ก๏ธ
Climate Regulation
Natural Cooling
Shade from trees can reduce temperatures by up to 10ยฐF in hot cities
World's forests store an estimated 662 billion tons of carbon
Deforestation releases stored carbon and contributes to climate change
๐ณ One Oak Tree, Hundreds of Species
A single mature oak tree can support over 500 different species of insects, birds, mammals, fungi, mosses, and lichens โ making it one of the most ecologically valuable trees in North America. Caterpillars that feed on oak leaves are the primary food source for most woodland birds. When oak populations decline, it ripples through the entire forest ecosystem.
Tree Facts
3 trillion
trees on Earth โ about 400 trees for every person alive, though the number is declining
31%
of Earth's land surface is covered by forests โ about 10 billion acres of trees worldwide
15 billion
trees are cut down every year โ while only about 5 billion are planted as replacements
662 Gt
of carbon stored in world's forests โ more than all the carbon in Earth's atmosphere
