The Two Main Types of Trees
All trees can be divided into two broad categories based on how they handle their leaves โ particularly through the changing seasons. Understanding this difference is one of the first steps in learning to identify trees!

Deciduous Trees
Lose Leaves in Fall
- Shed all their leaves in autumn and grow new ones each spring
- Leaves change color before falling โ green chlorophyll breaks down, revealing yellow, orange, and red pigments that were always there
- Examples: oak, maple, elm, birch, cherry, apple, beech, and ash

Evergreen Trees
Keep Leaves Year-Round
- Keep their leaves (often needle-shaped) all year โ replacing them gradually rather than all at once
- Waxy, needle-like leaves resist freezing and reduce water loss in cold, dry winters
- Examples: pine, spruce, fir, cedar, redwood, holly, and most tropical trees

Underground Network
- Absorb water and minerals from the soil through millions of tiny root hairs
- Anchor the tree in the ground โ can spread wider than the tree is tall
- Some trees share nutrients with neighboring trees through underground fungal networks

Central Support
- Outer bark protects the tree from insects, disease, fire, and temperature extremes
- Cambium layer just under the bark is the living growing tissue โ adds a new ring each year
- Heartwood at the center provides structural strength โ it's dead wood but essential for support

Branches & Crown
Light Gatherer
- Branches spread out to position leaves where they can capture the most sunlight
- The crown (all branches and leaves together) can cover a huge area in large trees
- Provide habitat, nesting sites, and food for birds, squirrels, and insects

Solar Panels
- Capture sunlight for photosynthesis โ converting COโ and water into glucose and oxygen
- A large oak tree may have 200,000 leaves โ providing a huge surface area for photosynthesis
- Release water vapor through transpiration โ cooling the tree and contributing to rainfall
Reading Tree Rings
When a tree is cut down, you can count the rings in its trunk to determine its age โ one ring per year. Scientists who study tree rings are called dendrochronologists. Wider rings indicate years with good growing conditions (plenty of rain and warmth); narrow rings indicate drought, cold, or other stressful years. Tree rings can reveal hundreds of years of climate history!
