Massachusetts Homeschool Overview
Massachusetts has moderate homeschool regulation. Families must obtain approval from their local school superintendent or school committee before beginning. Approval must be renewed annually. The state does not have a specific homeschool statute — homeschooling is governed by case law (Charles decision, 1987) which established the right to homeschool with school approval.

Getting Approved to Homeschool in MA
Contact your local school district's superintendent or homeschool coordinator. Submit an education plan before beginning instruction. Your plan should include: curriculum or materials you'll use, how you'll track hours and progress, and how you'll evaluate your child's progress at the end of the year. Most districts have a standard form — call or check the district website first.
Annual Evaluation Options
Massachusetts districts typically accept one of these methods, but defer to what your district specifies in your approval:
- Portfolio review by a certified teacher or the superintendent
- Standardized test (MCAS or nationally normed test)
- Progress evaluation written by a professional with qualifications acceptable to the district
