Pennsylvania has more detailed homeschool requirements than most states. Here's exactly what you need to file, teach, and document each year.
Pennsylvania Homeschool Requirements (2025)
📋 Annual Affidavit
- File a notarized affidavit with your local school district superintendent by August 1 each year
- Teaching parent must have a high school diploma
- Affidavit must include names and ages of children and a list of subjects to be taught
📚 Required Subjects
- English (reading, writing, spelling, grammar)
- Mathematics (through 8th grade)
- Science
- Social Studies / Geography / History of PA and the US
- Civics
- Safety and First Aid
- Health and Physical Education
- Music and Art
📅 Instructional Hours
- Elementary (grades 1–6): minimum 900 hours per year
- Secondary (grades 7–12): minimum 990 hours per year
- 180 days is an acceptable alternative
📁 Annual Portfolio & Evaluation
- Maintain a portfolio of work samples, reading materials, and activity logs
- Portfolio must be evaluated annually by a Pennsylvania-certified teacher or licensed evaluator
- Evaluator submits a written evaluation letter to the parent
- Parent submits the evaluation letter to the superintendent
